Compressed database backup

Postby xprt007 » 04/08/2007 5:05 am

Hi,

When I make database/site root directory back-ups of adp & indeed any other unrelated ones using cpanel, it saves the content in some compressed format, I think winrar or tar ... Anyway, whichever format it is, my question is when using phpmyadmin, can one upload the db in that format, with phpmyadmin decompressing it after?

I have already accumulated about 16.5MB of compressed stuff & on decompressing it on my PC, it came to about 60MBs & still rapidly growing, which at least as far as free hosts are concerned limit the DBs one can upload at ago, meaning one has to break the back up in small chunks, which I think can cause some major headaches due to the amount of data involved, uploading it via phhmyadmin (countless time outs & co).

I can currently simply use the same means currently via the cpanel interface to upload back ups, but my question is referring to moving the site to a new server/host, when I am through with construction, from the back up on my pc.

Thanks for any thoughts...

I would talk to the admin at the new server. Usually all web hosting companies offer free site transfer when you change hosting and move to their servers.
