exact phrase searches not working correctly

Postby recipe lady » 01/09/2007 9:32 pm

Hello All

Install went flawless, (think most install problems are hosting issues) I'm trying to understand exact phrase searching. I have a test DB on my site which has 2 pages with Sally Lund Bread. If I do a strict search +Sally +Lund +Breads I find the two pages. But if I search "Sally Lunn Bread" I find 23 pages. They all have Sally Lunn Bread or Bread in them. Since my users are not patient they may learn to use the "" but not adding +prefix to words.

The about ADP page gives Boolean rules:
----------------------------------
Find results that contain the exact phrase "some words" (for example, results that contain "some words of wisdom" but not "some noise words"). Note that the '"' characters that enclose the phrase are operator characters that delimit the phrase. They are not the quotes that enclose the search string itself.
-----------------------------------

I dont understand this part
-------------
Note that the '"' characters that enclose the phrase are operator characters that delimit the phrase. They are not the quotes that enclose the search string itself.
--------------

can I get searching "Sally Lund Bread" to give me the two pages which has the exact phrase??

Thanks for any tips

PS. Lets send Pavel money for a laptop!!

I believe (although I could be wrong myself) that what is meant is the quotes are not a part of the actual search.

They cause the script to search for the exact phrase within those quotes, and not the quotes themselves.

*again...could be wrong here*

Ah-ha so thats what it means, Thanks for the help now I get it.

So any idea why it does not work?? I only get correct results if I use the + operator (+Sally +Lund +Bread) give 2 hits and "Sally Lunn Bread" gives 16 (everything with Bread)

I'm quite sure it does not work

Guys, after extensive testing I'm quite sure exact phrase searching does not work correctly when using the quote delimiter. On my site (a test index of about 100 pages related to baking) I have two pages with the term Sally Lunn Bread. If I enter
["Sally Lunn Bread"] (with the quotes in the search box) I get 23 pages i.e. everything with Bread.

I can only get the exact phrase to come up if I enter
[Sally +Lunn +Bread]. Now thats Ok but my concern is my users will not undersatnd this and would continue to use the quotes.

Is this just a property of Boolean search criteria??

Thanks

Hi Dudes,

just installed, configured, customized and embedded ADP in my (german) Website. I was very glad that i found just the thing that i needed and i´m very grateful, because i´m a total looser in programming. And that´s the point. I´m too dumb to understand some things:

1. the search with quotation-marks doesn´t seem too work (as mentioned in the previous posts)

2. the advanced search doesn´t seem to know "umlaute" (i don´t know the englisch word for this) as ä,ö,ü and-so-on. I tried to change the "accept-charset"-line in the search-forms into utf-8. Now i get searchresults, but the "umlaute" in the catory-descriptions are only shown as "?".

Does somebody know the answers to these riddles (they are riddles, at least for me)?

Thanks,
ernesto

p.s. sorry for my wierd english...

Hi Pavel

The phrase search is still not working on the latest downloads.

Any news on resolving this?

I was just bumping it in case it had been overlooked.

Having said that, assuming it is fixed in Ver.2, I'd rather Pavel spent his time on getting ver.2 ready.
