What are these giant files?

Postby xprt007 » 06/05/2007 12:40 pm

I have just found some big files I dont remember noticing before in adp/admin: core.3913 (17.3MB), core.9196 (17.3MB) and core.15073 (16.75MB) as I was downloading a copy of my adp from my site onto the pc & noticed some unusually big files. I expected it to be not much more than 1MB in total with files I added to the original adp files.
Or could it be I unintentionally uploaded some foreign files into the adp/admin?

The format is also quite strange, not php or anything I know. When I opened it with an html editor, i only get lots of 0s etc. .

That is interesting, somewhat haunting too. So they were just in /adp/admin/ ?

Did you catch a date that they were created? If so, can you check logs etc to make sure it was not malicious. You know, just to be sure.

Oh and PS. I checked my server and I saw nothing that matched your description, so try to find out what made this happen.

Whats the default server error log file names? Also, it might be automatic back up files. Ask your server admin of what they think.

Hi,

These are the details I got about them, from the Cpanel file manager & the dates from the ftp client.

core.15073
File Type: ELF 32-bit LSB core file Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), SVR4-style, from 'php'
17.2MB - 01.04.2007

core.3913
File Type: ELF 32-bit LSB core file Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), SVR4-style, from 'php'
17.7MB - 01.04.2007

core.9196
File Type: ELF 32-bit LSB core file Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), SVR4-style, from 'php'
18.2MB – 01.04.2007

I have sent a question to the webhost to ask about them, but not sure how fast the response will take.

In the "error log" in the Cpanel, there's only a list of errors of the last 2 days and nothing referring to them.

Where are back-ups normally stored? If this is not set in the admin panel of adp, then I've certainly not set it anywhere else.
I was contemplating deleting them ...

Oh, ok. Now I can see what these are. Take a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_dump
Also more info on it here: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Fi ... gle+Search

Ok, thanks. Going to throw them out. I hope they dont resurface sometime or under some other guise or in another place.

Interesting, I was not aware of this. At least it was not malicious!
